Upgrading to MovableType 3.2

| | Comments (4) | TrackBacks (0)

Well, I got tired of dealing with comment spam using MT-Blacklist and decided it was time to upgrade MovableType. I can't believe they're at version 3.2 (I'd still been running 2.6.something).

I had a bunch of customized templates, and their template structure changed significantly. So I decided to go to their basic templates, select a nifty style and then gradually add some of my old stuff.

BTW, the MT 3.2 GUI is pretty slick. I like their AJAX based install/upgrade. I don't require TypeKey registration, but I hope that even so they'll block more of the comment-spam without me having to do as much work.

What mechanism is used to block blog spam if typekey registration is not used?

Weird. I thought I had made a wrong turn on the indormation superhighway.

I miss the random photos on top! I miss your photo album!! Will you bring those back?

I'll make sure to bring the photos back - although I may start feeding them from Flickr, if I get off my tush to upload some new ones.

Pat, MT 3.2 has a couple of nice comment spam features:

  • Comments are given a spamminess score (-10 to 10) and you can specify which level you want to mark as "junk". Though I don't know how they calculate spamminess.
  • Comments can be configured so that you have to approve them (or mark them as junk, which may help the spamminess detector) before they are published to your site.
  • You can configure "junk" comments to be automatically deleted after a set period of time.
  • People with TypeKey accounts can publish immediatelly, if you want.
  • People whom you "trust" (i.e. whose email address you marked as trusted) can also publish comments immediatelly.
