Kočka leze dírou
Before their visit, my parents asked me what they could bring from CH or CR. I mainly asked for childrens books and music for Magda. They brought books with stories I remember from my childhood (some even translated into English, which looks kind of weird) and a children's song CD called Kočka leze dírou (the name of a common song).
The song listing on the CD listed almost 40 different songs -- and I realized that I still knew the tune and most of the words to almost every single one of them. These are simple folk songs, usually consiting of only a couple of verses, but still! Many of them I'd already been singing to Magda, and I probably sing her another dozen of songs that aren't on that CD.
I wonder whether all Czechs have such a repertoir of folk songs. I talked with my dad about this, and he said that when he was little (in the'50s) they tought them many folk songs at school. I don't know whether that was a post-war self-assertion or what, but I don't really remember learning that many songs at school.
I do remember singing a lot with my family. On every car trip, we'd go throught the alphabet, stop at a random letter and then sing a song starting with that letter. Singing is big in my family, lots of Czech songs and Moravian as well -- they have cool melodies and that's where my grandpa was from. The tunes are simple and lovely and easy to harmonize with.
I hope I'll manage to pass this stuff down to my children, too.
