Depth of Field

My photography class is over, and I think I'll sign up for some of the "advanced" classes next spring--definitely landscape and maybe natural light portraits. I like the Informal Classes format, it's about the right amount of time I want to invest (the advanced classes have field trips) and the price is right.

I think I got out of the class what I wanted. Most of the information I could have gotten out of an intro book but being in class made me think more about the concepts and got me to try out different things.

Now that I'm shooting with an SLR again, I really am getting a kick out of using shallow depth of field. I bought the Canon 50mm f/1.8 II lense (as seen in a mirror) and when it's wide open, it's drastically different from the zoom that came with the camera.

In the park there is a patch of some large plants that have big orange flowers through most of the summer. They're past their prime now, but they are still fun to photograph. The only problem is that they're so tall, it's difficult to take a picture without the sky in it.

I got this leaf and flower after a rain and then again (with the 50mm) after the sun hit them in the morning--those aren't macro shots, the flowers, leaves and water drops were all huge. I also got some wildflowers in the park today.
