Danskin Weekend
Another year, another Danskin Triathlon. This year, Jennifer was one of the workout leaders in the Team Danskin training program which actually meant that she was helping others instead of working out as much herself. It also meant that she'd be starting in the second wave, which caused me to be awake before 6 am on a Sunday--Jfer and had mom had actually left and some ungodly hour way before then.
I got out of the house around 6:30 and made awesome speed to the expo center. Ran with Homer on my site to the shuttle busses and actually made it to the lake before the whole thing started.
The race was like most other Danskin's at Decker Lake. Lots of participants, lots of friends and families cheering on. They were better at keeping the spectators off the road this year, although at times they were a bit anal about it (a Travis Co. deputy first stopped me from crossing the road, and then lectured about watching for cyclists--this about 15 minutes before the first bike actually took that road). I think I managed to take Jfer's picture at all the major transitions.
The end of the race was actually pleasant for those of us watching. A stiff breeze picked up and kept us nice and cool. It also made for some choppy water for the swimmers that started in later rounds. Homer didn't seem to have too many problems with the waves, though.
After everyone (Meredith, Jfer, Rita and Elizabeth) arrived, they announced that a storm was heading our way. The wind really picked up after I left the park and walked with Homer (and Rita's oh-so-heavy ice chest) back to the Expo Center where my car was. It was pretty dramatic--hordes and herds of people quickly scrambling, dust and debris flying through the air. I waited for a tornado to touch down--nope, just a lot of dust and wind. We made it to the car and I waited for the sky to burst open--and nothing. Just a few drops of rain and that was pretty much it.
We celebrated at P.F. Chang's and then did some power napping before Rita left for Arlington and Jfer and I for work. No rest for the wicked.
